Explore Fremantle & Beyond

Fremantle

This beautiful coastal port city bounded by the Indian Ocean and the Swan River is just 20 km from Perth. The City of Fremantle was established in 1829 as a port for the Swan River Colony and was the major city in Western Australia for much of its early history.

Fremantle’s unique character is captured by its landscape, its heritage architecture, music, arts and culture, festivals, retail stores and markets, cafés and restaurants, which all contribute to its village style atmosphere – making it a popular destination for local and international visitors.

A series of islands lie off the coast of Fremantle including the famous holiday island of Rottnest, Garden Island and Carnac Island. Rottnest Island is the only island that has a regular ferry service transporting visitors to and from Fremantle.

The enclosed and sheltered Fishing Boat Harbour and Success Harbour protect the city’s working and recreational fleets and are within walking distance of the city centre. The Fishing Boat Harbour precinct also features boardwalks, café’s restaurants and a brewery

Enjoy fish and chips at the Fishing Boat Harbour and finish off with local WA beer at the famous Little Creatures Brewery.

Explore the iconic Fremantle Markets and then relax and enjoy some al fresco food and coffee on the Cappuccino Strip.

Visit the hugely popular World Heritage Fremantle Prison and Round House and relive the convict days.

Explore Australia’s national centre for maritime collections at Australian National Maritime Museum.

See Fremantle from the water with Westcoast Jet and Duyfken Sailing ship.

Take a journey into Western Australian history on a Segway. Some of the oldest buildings and structures are located in the port City of Fremantle.

Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island is located just off-shore from Perth. This island is a 35 minute ferry ride from Fremantle. The island boasts the best this area has to offer, with secluded sandy white beaches, crystal clear waters for snorkelling around the area’s coral reefs and an array of native animals to view. Rotto, as it is called by the locals is a car free zone, adding to the relaxed feel of the island.
